John Mitchell's (mostly DotNetNuke) Blog - How do you find quality DotNetNuke modules?
 Saturday, February 03, 2007

By and large, the top sellers on Snowcovered are pretty good, especially if they have maintained those spots for a number of weeks. You won't find all the best modules there though, because as the market has matured, the better vendors have started selling from their own sites.

A new player on the scene called FlatBurger plans to adress your specific concerns head on, and they have already done a good job proving they are up to the task.  Unfortunately you missed the Accelerant Program where a $1000 of modules was offered free for one year so you could try before you by.  But there is more to come from the My FlatBurger site where module developers will have access to powerful licensing, and website creators/end users will have the opportunity to find trial licenses of modules.

That being said, I can personally recommend some modules from my experience of over 4 years working with different modules in DotNetNuke:

If you don't already have this one (and who doesn't?), get Will Morgenweck's ActiveForums module from ActiveModules.  This package is very robust and can really be used for more than just discussions.  The administration is fantastic, and the module can be installed and configured in minutes.

If you want an Articles/News module then you can't go wrong with getting a subscription to Scott McCulloch's site. Actually, it doesn't matter if you want anything specific.  The subscription has so much value that anyone would be crazy not to take advantage of it. You don't have to take my word for it though, check out this thread.

For a great e-commerce system, look no further than Susanne Koehler's CataLook Store.  The administration can be a little over-whelming at first, but that is just because it is jam packed with features. No need to fear though, Susanne offers expert support for her product through e-mail and forums. And not only that, Nina Meiers even runs a Catalook Support site.

For a Form builder, and all around swiss-army knife you should take a serious look at Kelly Ford's XMod from DnnDev. The learning curve for "normal" users on this one is a little steep, but once you start using it, you'll be dreaming up new ways to put it to use. Not only that, but expert help is close by in DnnDev's forum.

For a full fledged Documents module check out Peter Donker of Bring2Mind's Document Exchange.  It's a little pricey, but if you want to manage documents there isn't a better module in my opinion.

What is the common theme that makes all of the above recommendations my personal list of great modules?  The developers.  These devs have been constantly supporting and growing the DotNetNuke Ecosystem and are in my opinion the number one reason why DNN has enjoyed the success it has.
